Green computing

Green computing, the study and practice of efficient and eco-friendly computing resources, is now under the attention of not only environmental organizations, but also businesses from other industries. In recent years, companies in the computer industry have come to realize that going green is in their best interest, both in terms of public relations and reduced costs. This article will take a look at several green initiatives currently under way in the computer industry, as well as issues that have been raised regarding these initiatives.

The field of "green technology " encompasses a broad range of subjects — from new energy-generation techniques to the study of advanced materials to be used in our daily life. Green technology focuses on reducing the environmental impact of industrial processes and innovative technologies caused by the Earth’s growing population. It has taken upon itself the goal to provide society’s needs in ways that do not damage or deplete natural resources. Mainly this means creating fully recyclable products, reducing pollution, proposing alternative technologies in various fields, and creating a center of economic activity around technologies that benefit the environment.

Perhaps the most talked about aspect of green technology is the promise of alternative energy sources. Sun, wind, water, sugar — we’ve heard about them all. However, scientists are working on other aspects of the problem as well, testing building materials and studying chemical processes to reduce the use and generation of hazardous substances. Nanotechnology is also being used in an attempt to manipulate materials at the nanometer scale; scientists are hoping it can transform manufacturing on a global level, from government purchasing to a technological revolution.

The huge amount of computing manufactured worldwide has a direct impact on environment issues, and scientists are conducting numerous studies in order to reduce the negative impact of computing technology on our natural resources. Companies are addressing e-waste by offering take-back recycling programs and other solutions, with lower energy consumption and less wasted hardware. A central point of research is testing and applying alternative nonhazardous materials in the products’ manufacturing process.

Let us Understand it better

We can't live without PCs, so let’s learn how to live with them in a way that makes them friendlier to the environment. Currently, PC’s consume far too much electricity and generate too much e-waste to to be considered an Eco-friendly solution by today’s standards. With a typical PC taking approximately 110 watts to run, and with well over 1 billion of them on the planet, it’s easy to understand what the Silicon Valley Toxics Commission is saying about e-waste is being the fastest growing part of the waste stream.

Green Computing is the Future

The benefits of green computing are clear. As the number of PCs approaches 2 Billion by 2015, the potential savings related to energy use , CO2 emissions and e-waste are undeniable.

The Global Impact of Billions of PCs

How many computers are actually in use? According to a report by Forrester Research, by the end of 2008, there were over one billion PCs in use worldwide.

As PC adoption grows globally, it is estimated that there will be more than two billion PCs in use by 2015. It took 27 years to reach one billion but will only take 7 more years to double that number. With this trend, something needs to change.

If NComputing systems were used at a ratio of 6 NComputing devices to each PC:

Energy use would decline by over 143 billion kilowatt hours per year
CO2 emissions would decrease by 114 million metric tons. That’s like planting 550 million trees!
E-waste would be reduced by 7.9 million metric tons

Current Available Solutions

Simple and Efficient Solution by Using Desktop Virtualization

Today's PCs are so powerful that we no longer need one PC per person. We can tap into the excess power in one PC and share it with many users. NComputing thin client devices use just 1 to 5 watts, last for a decade, and generate just a few ounces of e-waste. Not only is this a simple solution to a complex problem, the efficiencies achieved using this technology are amazing. NComputing solutions save 75% on hardware, and since they draw less than 5 watts of power, you can reduce your energy footprint by as much as 90% per user. NComputing thin client devices produce practically no heat, reducing the need for energy-consuming air conditioning. Electricity savings alone can pay for the NComputing virtual desktops in as little as one year

Power generation

One major green computing change that will benefit the environment, is to use alternative power sources. Most energy providers now have an option for using "green power" generated from Solar, windmills, hydroelectric, photovoltaic panels, or nuclear sources, although some of these sources are perceived to be more environmentally friendly than others.

Solar UPS system, one among the most convenient and growing technology specially designed for urban houses and commercial institutions, which require and un-interrupted power source with a considerable saving in electricity bill. The main power source of the system is Solar PV Modules, which produces DC electricity from sunlight. This DC electricity is stored into the batteries. The sine wave inverter of the Power Conditioning Unit converts DC into AC to supply the AC loads. Works from solar (INVERTER mode) when battery is fully charged and continue to work in this mode till battery state of charge reaches 50% Changes over to Mains supply, when battery state of charge become 50%. At this moment, if utility power is not available, system continue to work in Inverter mode till battery state of charge reaches 20%.

In MAINS  mode, if utility power fails, it automatically change over to INVERTER mode When battery state of charge become 20%, energize a contact, which can start a diesel generator or external power source like wind mills etc.

Key Features:

Maximum utilization of Solar Energy
Energy Management Function
Microprocessor controlled
Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT)
Built-in Automatic Voltage regulation (AVR)
Pure Sine Wave Inverter
Built-in over voltage and short circuit protection

Intelligent Power management Solutions

Above two methods surely call for a fresh investment, Still if we want to manage to control the power consumption, The solid solution is the usage of effective power management- to enable and ensure the proper deployment we would like to introduce IPM Plus Solution which empower your green initiatives

IPMPlus Approach to Power Management

'Discover, Measure, Analyze and Save' 'Policies based on power consumption, system usage, application usage'

Comprehensive Metering of Power Consumption at Node Level, Rack Level, PDU Level, UPS Level enables you to measure and optimize the energy consumption and savings.

IPMPlus is based on a US Patented Application Sensors that detect which applications are active and intelligently turns off various power hungry components in the system, without interrupting the user's work. Application Sensors are configured for commonly used desktop and server applications.

Unified Dashboard shows real time status, events, power consumption, peak load and savings. Detailed reporting enables you to track and manage your energy consumption at organization, group and a node level. With Integrated Performance and Energy Measurements, Manage your IT Utilization, Energy Usage, Capacity and Demand efficiently.

Power Policies can be defined centrally via IPM Management Console and policies can be applied to desktops / servers remotely. The enterprise edition allows creation of multiple workgroups of users and the power policies can be customized for every workgroup. A hierarchy of administrators can be created and role based access can be enabled for administrators to manage one or more workgroups.

Integrated IT Asset Discovery & Event Reporting - Enables Tracking and Management of IT assets and their status

Global Scheduler - Enables scheduling of Power Polices, jobs at Group and Node Level based on the workload pattern

Summary

The combination of above all may ensure a proper and efficient Green computing deployment, There are many more regulations are expected from the government side soon. As part of a responsible organization implementation of green computing and preserving the natural blessing to the next generation is one among the key moral responsibility. Kindly understand the possibilities and keep looking for implementing such solutions and spread the messages across.
